President Abdulla Yameen’s influence within the Maldives Police Service is obvious, says MP Imthiyaz Fahmy, who was summoned to the police headquarters on Monday night.

The parliamentarian was summoned over the police’s investigation into statements he made at a press conference on March 16th, in order for them to get photographic and audio samples of him.

Speaking to journalists after having concluded his meeting with the police, MP Fahmy said he had asked officers about matters he had filed with the police, over threats and even assault against him.

The lawmaker had filed cases of death threats against him and an individual throwing crude oil on him as he left his home ahead of a parliamentary sitting, neither of which are being currently investigated.

With such investigations yet pending, the police taking on cases that are of political interest to the ruling party, such as the allegations made against him, is an obvious sign of continued executive influence amongst the police, Fahmy said.

He went on to say that following the ‘unlawful orders of a tyrannical’ ruler will not give officers the security ‘they believe they are getting’.
