A safari company has been fined MVR 300,000 after tourists caused damage GA Hithaadhoo, a protected site.

The island, known for its Lesser Frigatebird, is on the protected list for its fragile ecosystem.

In January 2017, Tourists aboard the safari boat went ashore and caused various amounts of damage to the island’s environment. The boat had also cast its anchor into the protected reef.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not disclose the name of the company.

It is illegal for anyone to enter protected sites without authorization.
