There will be no one to express discontent and ‘raise their voices up in concern’, when President Abdulla Yameen’s ‘cronies’ are arrested, says Mohamed Shifaz, deputy president of the Maldivian Democratic Party.
Shifaz, previously a parliamentarian himself, said this speaking at the opposition demonstration held in capital city Malé, calling for the implementation of the unanimous Supreme Court ruling on February 1st and President Yameen’s resignation.
Shifaz said that demonstrators and pro-democracy activists arrested at opposition rallies have the guarantee that those beside them will continue to call for their release and for fair prosecution, something that those loyal to the current government will not have.
Following this narrative, Shifaz called on the police gathered to disperse the demonstration to stand against injustice and tyranny, referring to the opposition’s stance that the state of emergency and restrictions on freedom of assembly and expression are unlawful and unconstitutional.
