Lifting State of Emergency ‘first step’ in restoring constitutional rights: EU
EU said the government should restore the respect for the rule of law, protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of expression, and the right to fair trial
‘The government must release all political prisoners, including those detained under Emergency regulations, and stop interfering in the work of the Majlis and the judiciary.’

Lifting of the State of Emergency needs to be the first step in restoring all constitutionally guaranteed rights, says the European Union (EU).

The EU delegation to the Maldives said this in a Twitter post on Friday.

In the tweet, EU said the government should restore the respect for the rule of law, protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of expression, and the right to fair trial.

In a second tweet, EU said: ‘The government must release all political prisoners, including those detained under Emergency regulations, and stop interfering in the work of the Majlis and the judiciary.’

The European Parliament recently adopted a resolution to impose targeted sanctions and travel bans against human rights abusers in the Maldives over the political turmoil in the country.  The resolution also supports the Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling on February 1st, to reinstate lawmakers and to release unfairly detained individuals.
