European Parliament to debate on motion over situation in Maldives
Maldive is being scrutinized over breaches of human rights, democracy and the rule of law

The Council of the European Union also adopted a number of conclusions on the Maldives

Seven groups in the European Parliament have presented a comprehensive set of motions on the situation in the Maldives.

The motions for resolution were put forth for ‘debate on cases of breaches of human rights, democracy and the rule of law’, and are to be debated on in Strasbourg, France on Thursday.

The motions highlight instances of human rights violations, infringement of the rule of law, and the government’s plan to end Maldives’ moratorium on capital punishment.

In late February, the European Union said it would consider targeted measures on Maldivian officials if the situation in the country does not improve.

The Council of the European Union also adopted a number of conclusions on the Maldives and called on the government to lift its ongoing state of emergency, and to ensure independence of the judiciary.
