Wadde was arrested from his home in capital city Malé under Maldives’ ongoing state of emergency, while Ibu was arrested under a court warrant.
On 8th March, special operations officers had stormed the MDP’s headquarters in Malé and arrested council members Ilyas Labeeb, a former parliamentarian as well, and Hassan ‘Hassantay’ Ahmed.
The Maldives Police Service’s special operations unit has been heavily active since President Abdulla Yameen imposed the state of emergency in early February.
Officers of the unit are facing allegations of using disproportionate force and hazardous tactics to disperse demonstrations against the government, and their actions have led to injuries to both journalists and civilians.
