The staff of RaajjeTV has donated to VMedia’s fund to pay off a MVR 400,000 fine for a broadcasting violation.
RaajjeTV COO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa said the fines are a hindrance to the media’s efforts to hold the government accountable, and asked that everyone donate to VMedia’s fund.
VMedia’s Director General Imad Latheef said that RaajjeTV has also been the victim of numerous fines and so VMedia would need RaajjeTV’s experience in the matter.
Imad also noted that some regulators are seen to be looking out for interests of specific parties.
The broadcasting commission imposed a fine of MVR 400,000 on VMedia for airing a statement by MP Mohamed Mustafa at an opposition rally in December, which had violated anti-defamation laws.
VMedia group placed a fund box in the lobby area of their office to receive donations from supporters and well-wishers to pay up the fine within the thirty-day deadline.
