Ahmed Nadheem, apprehended under the ongoing state of emergency, is being given un-safe drinking water, his lawyer has said.
The lawyer, Moosa Siraj, said at a conference on Sunday night that officers of the Maldives Correctional Services have been giving his client ‘water used to clean toilets’ for drinking.
Siraj further said that Nadheem’s health has seen significant decline since his incarceration. Mahfooz Saeed, a lawyer who has represented Nadheem as well, earlier attested to this as well.
My client @MNadhym has been suffering from diarrhea and dehydration since last week. Despite several requests and complaints he is still not provided clean water to drink. Arrested on 5th February and no question asked yet. Everyone responsible for this will be held accountable!

Siraj said at Sunday’s conference that this has been brought to the attention of both the police and the correctional services, to no avail. His lawyers have also reached out to the Human Rights Commission of Maldives.
His lawyers also said that the police have yet to question him, despite keeping him in incarceration since early February. They have brought this to the attention of the Prosecutor General’s Office as well.
Nadheem was arrested alongside former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, his father-in-law, after President Abdulla Yameen suddenly imposed a state of emergency in the country.
The state of emergency, also contested on the grounds that it did not go through the processes required by law, was imposed on February 5th. The government had used its authority to apprehend two Supreme Court justices as well.
