State minister Dunya Maumoon has called for the immediate release of her father, former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, “who served his people sincerely for 30 years!”

On Twitter on Friday, Dunya said she was looking forward to the day when “we can walk together again”.

Gayoom was arrested over allegations of attempting to overthrow the government, following the declaration of the state of emergency. His son MP Faris Maumoon, son-in-law Mohamed Nadheem, and several of his associates have also been arrested.

Dunya has recently come out to call for Gayoom’s release, but she has been facing criticism for holding on to a government position.
