The Maldives Broadcasting Commission has on Thursday fined Raajje Television for suspending regular broadcast earlier this month, a decision it took following multiple threats.
The commission informed the station of this through a letter it sent on Thursday, where it said that the decision to suspend its broadcast was against its code of conduct.
The commission sited violations of broadcast laws and procedures, Articles 40 and 22 respectively, to impose a fine a total of MVR 2,000.
Raajje Television has been asked to make the fine’s payment in full by 12:00 PM on 20th March.
Raajje Television said it has been receiving multiple threats, including encouragement of violence against its staff.
“RaajjeTV suspends regular broadcast due to continued threats on free and independent journalism, this station, and our staff. Given that the police have stopped providing security and in light of the military's warning to have media outlets penalized without prior notice” the station’s broadcasted message read.
