Sri Lankan speaker sends letter of concern to Maldives counterpart

Sri Lankan Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has sent a letter of concern to Maldives Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, over the current political crisis in Maldives.

Writing as the chair of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians, Jayasuriya said that democratic norms and Parliamentary practices appear to be in peril at this time in the Maldives.

The Colombo Gazette reported that the Sri Lankan speaker expressed concern over the recent developments in Maldives, including the declaration of emergency and arrests, and disrespect of the Supreme Court rulings, which he said threatens Constitutional principles and undermine the rule of law and independence of the judiciary.
