50 MPs will vote to lift State of Emergency: MP Mahloof
12 MPs dismissed from seats instructed to attend session

Galolhu South Constituency MP Ahmed Mahloof says that in Monday’s extraordinary sitting of the Parliament, 50 Members of Parliament will vote to lift the State of Emergency.

In a tweet posted following the announcement that the Parliament will convene for a sitting, MP Mahloof said he and his fellow Parliamentarians wished to convey to President Abdullah Yameen that the declaration of State of Emergency would be lifted.

Parliament Secretariat had sent notices of Parliament sitting for Monday, to all Parliamentarians, including those 12 MPs dismissed from their seats by the Elections Commission (EC).

No agenda was published. However, as per laws, the Parliament has to deliberate on the State of Emergency motion on Monday. Laws dictate that the State of Emergency motion must be put to the Parliament in a period of 14 days, if the Parliament is in recess.

Parliament was scheduled to start in the first week of this month but was delayed due to security reasons.

Some MPs are still under Police custody, including Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon, Mahchangolhi South Constituency MP Ahmed Sinan, Dhangethi Constituency MP Ilham Ahmed and Maamigili Constituency MP Qasim Ibrahim.

Another tweet by the Parliamentarian also gave an indication that the opposition may seek to boycott the session. He said that 43 MPs must be present to deliberate on the State of Emergency; if the opposition boycott the session, then there is no way the Parliament can deliberate on the said issue.
