Ex-VP Jameel asks 'world to help resolve crisis'

Former Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, now a senior member of the opposition, has called on the international community to help resolve Maldives’ ongoing constitutional crisis.

Jameel, the leader of the Maldives United Opposition (MUO), said this in a post on his Twitter account, following the unrest in capital city Malé over Friday’s opposition rally.

Jameel was President Abdulla Yameen’s first vice president and had been impeached through a parliamentary vote backed by both pro-government and opposition lawmakers.

His removal, though heavily supported, was legally contentious. The parliament, with a majority of pro-government lawmakers, had amended procedures so as the impeachment would not require a committee probe.

A letter from his lawyer, where he had denied the charges of incompetence and conspiring against the government, had also been rejected by parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

Since then, Jameel had aligned himself with the opposition and in June, 2016 signed an agreement with the Maldivian Democratic Party, the Adhaalath Party, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, and former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim, forming the MUO.
