Recently jailed former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s family is still trying to confirm if he is safe, says daughter Yumna Maumoon.
Gayoom was arrested on allegations of attempting to overthrow the government, after President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency on February 5.
He was first kept at Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre and was taken to Maafushi Prison, and was again taken to Dhoonidhoo on Thursday.
In a tweet on Friday, Yumna said they are still waiting for Gayoom to call them to make sure that he is safe and well.
She said that Dhoonidhoo Custodial did not inform the family that he was being kept there, and that the investigation officer confirmed this only after she called the police service.
Still waiting for my father @maumoonagayoom to call family so that we can be sure that he is safe and well. Last night @PoliceMv IO only confirmed only when I called him. Dhoonidhoo Custodial did not inform family. @hrcmv @UNHumanRights @amnesty

Gayoom’s lawyer Maumoon Hameed has said that his sudden transfers are worrying, and has asked the Maldives Human Rights Commission to send a rapid action force to Dhoonidhoo. But the commission has not confirmed that it is doing anything regarding the case.
