The police have linked ex-president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to the allegations of bribery and conspiring to overthrow the government put forth in relation to this month’s contentious Supreme Court ruling.
In a statement on Sunday, the police said that the former president has been providing financial assistance to Supreme Court justice Ali Hameed, both of whom are currently incarcerated.
The statement claims that a black suitcase had been found inside the residence of Najma Ibrahim, a former employee of Maumoon’s, which has evidence linking the former president and his family to the alleged crime.
“This suitcase contained documentary evidence that MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon bribed judges in order to influence court verdicts” the statement said.
The police further said they had found a bag containing hefty amounts of cash, which they believe belong to Justice Ali Hameed.
The bag reportedly contained USD 215,000 and MVR 150,000. The court justice had also bought a flat using a sum of USD 2.4 million, which was wired to him from a local company.
