Maldives in Crisis
Cannot see how current approach will deliver stability in Maldives, says Ambassador McKinnon
Dialogue is the key to resolution
Must lift State of Emergency
Fundamental rights must be restored

David McKinnon, Canadian Ambassador to the Maldives, has once again stressed the importance of inclusive dialogue in resolving the situation in the Maldives, adding that he could not see ‘how the current approach will deliver stability, democracy or prosperity’.

In a tweet posted on Sunday, the Ambassador said inclusive dialogue was the way forward.

His tweet also called on the Government to lift the State of Emergency in the country, now in the fifth day. McKinnon also called to restore fundamental rights and freedoms and expressed concern over the detentions of political figures.

The Government of Maldives’ decision to call in a State of Emergency was met with concern from international partners, with many nations issuing travel advisories.
