David McKinnon, Canadian Ambassador to the Maldives, has once again stressed the importance of inclusive dialogue in resolving the situation in the Maldives, adding that he could not see ‘how the current approach will deliver stability, democracy or prosperity’.
In a tweet posted on Sunday, the Ambassador said inclusive dialogue was the way forward.
Very concerned detentions continue, including of Safaath. Govt of #Maldives needs to lift SOE and restore fundamental rights and freedoms. Inclusive dialogue is the way forward--can't see how the current approach will deliver stability, democracy or prosperity.

His tweet also called on the Government to lift the State of Emergency in the country, now in the fifth day. McKinnon also called to restore fundamental rights and freedoms and expressed concern over the detentions of political figures.
The Government of Maldives’ decision to call in a State of Emergency was met with concern from international partners, with many nations issuing travel advisories.
