Pakistan says it will not interfere with Maldives' domestic affairs
Minister Asim reportedly met with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi
The government sent envoys to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and China

Foreign Minister Mohamed Asim has been told by the Pakistani government that the neighbouring nation will not interfere with Maldives’ domestic affairs.

Minister Asim reportedly met with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who told him that Pakistan will abide by the United Nations’ regulations and thus far has no intention to intervene in another sovereign nation’s domestic affairs.

Following the international chorus of concern caused by President Abdulla Yameen’s administration’s actions lately, which have been described as legally questionable, the government sent envoys to a number of nations.

The government sent envoys to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and China to reportedly inform them on the situation in the Maldives. Fisheries Minister Mohamed Shainee was sent to Saudi Arabia while Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed was sent to China.

Maldivian ambassador to India, Mohamed Ahmed, told Indian newspapers that the Yameen administration had initially intended to send an envoy to the subcontinent as well, but was told that the External Affairs Ministry could not schedule a meeting at this juncture.

India, along with the United Nations, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, and Germany, has called on the government to release political detainees and the arrested Supreme Court justices and lift the state of emergency.
