The United Nations’ Security Council is reportedly scheduled to discuss the ongoing political tension in Maldives, primarily the state of emergency declared by the government.

UN diplomats spoke to international news outlets to say that a closed-door meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, an Indian news outlet says.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement on Wednesday that the government should release Supreme Court justices Abdulla Saeed and Ali Hameed.

On Saturday, Secretary-General António Guterres had called on all parties in the Maldives to practice restraint and the earlier Supreme Court ruling to be respected.

This was shared in post on Twitter from the United Nations’ spokesperson, with a two-paragraph statement attached.

“The Secretary-General reiterates his belief in finding a solution to the political stalemate in the Maldives through all-party talks, which the United Nations continues to stand ready to facilitate” the statement reads.

The governments of the United Kingdom, Germany, United States, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, and China have all expressed concern over the political tension and called for the situation to be resolved peacefully.
