Representatives of the European Union currently in the Maldives have expressed concern at the government refusal to meet them.
The union’s ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives, Tung-Lai Margue, told journalists on Thursday that they have sent requests to government offices, all of which have gone on deaf ears.
Ambassador Margue noted that it was the government that had invited them guaranteeing dialogue over the ongoing political conflict in the Maldives.
“Despite our request for a number of meetings with members of the government, none of them have been honoured” Margue said.
While the European Union’s ambassador expressed frustration at this fact, Ambassador James Dauris from the United Kingdom highlighted the seriousness of the situation.
Ambassadors, Margue, Dauris, and Jörn Rohde of Germany has met with the opposition, and spoke to the press on Thursday outside the Maldivian Democratic Party’s headquarters.
