China asks citizens to refrain from travelling to Maldives

The Chinese government has called on its residents to refrain from travelling to the Maldives.

This is the second advisory China, a nation that Maldives signed over 10 landmark agreements with this year, released.

A previous advisory asked those travelling to the Maldives to exercise caution while in the country due to the ongoing turmoil in the country.

While the first remained, an additional advisory has been released cautioning them to postpone any travel to the Maldives.

“China suggests that Chinese citizens who are preparing to go to the Maldives in the near term to postpone going until the situation on the ground stabilizes” a spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry told international news outlets.

The government’s refusal to enforce a Supreme Court ruling to have political prisoners released has caused individuals discontent with it to express this on the streets of Malé.

The police have been cracking down on those gathered for this purpose with excessive force and the use of hazards such as pepper-spray and smoke grenades.
