Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed and South-Machchangoalhi MP Abdulla Sinan have been released from police custody.

The Criminal Court released them at their remand hearings on Monday.

Police have said the MPs were arrested upon their arrival in the Maldives on Sunday as per a court order, as part of an investigation.

They left the country last year following political turmoil after their support of the opposition motion to impeach pro-government speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

The Elections Commission at the time dismissed them from their parliamentary seats, but Supreme Court on Thursday ruled to reinstate them.

They had returned to the Maldives after the court warrants for their arrest were nullified.

Speaking to journalists after Monday’s court hearing, MP Sinan’s lawyer said state prosecutors requested to keep him in custody until the remainder of his trial.
