President Abdulla Yameen has appeared in public for the first time since Thursday night’s Supreme Court ruling, and announced that he is relaunching his bid for presidency.

Speaking to a number of supporters gathered in front of the campaign office run by his faction of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives, he said he thought he had already done so but considers this moment more auspicious.

'I was under the belief I had already started my campaign, but today, I say, with the grace of God, I kick off my campaign and bid for presidency' President Yameen said.

Yameen also said that he is currently in talks with justices of the Supreme Court in order to find adequate room to enforce the ruling.

‘A dialogue has been initiated, we are working on fully deciphering the Supreme Court ruling, we have been working with them and a dialogue has been initiated’ the president said.

Yameen also took several jabs at the four opposition leaders, calling them debtors and criminals.
