MP Ahmed Mahloof has said that the role of citizens in opposition coalition activities should increase for this year’s presidential election.
The spokesperson of the opposition coalition recently returned to Maldives after four months in Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a press conference held by main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mahloof vowed to continue calling out President Abdulla Yameen on his unlawful actions, and appealed citizens to join him.
“I might be arrested in the next few days. I came back to the Maldives even with the threat of arrest, to join the reform effort with the people.”
Noting that his passport was confiscated for three months while he was in Sri Lanka, Mahloof said that authorities did not question him upon his return.
Mahloof returned to the Maldives while his grandmother is in ADK Hospital’s intensive care unit.
The police service is investigating him on allegations of obstructing the duties of security officials at the parliament building on 31 July 2017.
