Mohamed Azmee, the bodyguard of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s family, was arrested on Wednesday.
A team from Special Operations (SO) also searched his residence, M Penzee House.
The arrest order was issued by Criminal Court’s chief judge Adam Arif.
Police have alleged that Azmee has been planning to overthrow the government by bribing lawmakers.
It also said that he would obstruct the investigation, if released, by influencing witnesses and hiding and destroying evidence.
Police have not confirmed that any evidence was found at his house.
Azmee has been providing security for the former president, on the approval of the defence force.
