Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested Najma Ibrahim, an employee at the Office of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Najma was arrested after a search on her residence on Wednesday evening.

Police had also confiscated her phone and a veil.

The arrest warrant stated that she was suspected of distributing and offering bribes to Members of Parliament in a bid to overthrow the present administration. The order added that given the circumstances, Najma’s arrest was a must, as she was a risk to the public, and might destroy evidence and intimidate any potential witnesses, as well as hinder the ongoing investigation.

As per the notice issued after the search, MPS had confiscated a phone found in the residence of Maafannu Wisteria. The phone was confiscated at 5.14pm, while the veil was confiscated at 5.36pm.
