The delegation of the European Union (EU) to Sri Lanka has expressed concern over the renewed arrest of MP Faris Maumoon.

MP Faris was arrested on Saturday on allegations of planning to overthrow the government, less than 48 hours following his release after six months in jail over bribery allegations.

The delegation noted that Faris was kept in jail the first time without any trial date on separate charges, and said that it further indicates how detrimental a breakdown of the principle of separation of executive, judicial and other powers would be to the rule of law and good government in the Maldives.

“We call on the responsible authorities in the Maldives to take immediate steps to restore and uphold the principles enshrined in the Constitution in the interest of all Maldivians.”

It also urged authorities to demonstrate genuine commitment to credible, transparent and inclusive election and pre-election processes, with the full participation of all political parties.

Faris is scheduled for a court hearing on Wednesday morning.
