President Abdulla Yameen has warned that overthrowing the current government will pave the way for the next government to suffer the same fate.

President Yameen said this while speaking at a ceremony of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on Monday night.

Noting that every political leader craves power, he questioned the benefit of overthrowing a government already in place.

President Yameen was a prominent player in the protest that led to the toppling of the previous government in 2012. The protests had escalated to the point where some police and military officers joined the then opposition.

Then President Mohamed Nasheed has maintained that he agreed to the controversial transfer of power under duress.
