Criminal Court has issued Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon a 15-day remand period after his arrest on Saturday.

MP Faris was arrested on allegations of planning to overthrow the government, two days after being released after six months in police custody.

Police also searched his house, as well as that of his father and opposition leader, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Speaking to journalists during the search, Faris told journalists that police commissioner Ahmed Areef informed him that President Abdulla Yameen had been repeatedly ordering the police service to arrest him.

The court warrant was issued at 4am by Judge Hussein Shaheed, who was just recently appointed to the Criminal Court.
