Police need to take action against those attempting to re-arrest Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon, says former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Police began searching Faris’ apartment building on Saturday, after he was released two days ago following 191 days in police custody.
In a tweet sent out regarding the search, Nasheed said the police, military, and courts 'should not give the opportunity for Faris to be arrested, again'.
Faris was arrested last July 18th over bribery charges, and the Court had ordered to keep him in remand until the investigation and trial into the matter concludes. However, on Thursday, it ruled to release the MP from custody.
Criminal Court authorized the police search of MP Faris’s home following allegations that he was conspiring with other parliamentarians to overthrow the government.
Speaking to journalists outside, Faris said he has met with Police Commissioner Ahmed Areef, who told him that President Abulla Yameen and other senior government officials were attempting to have him arrested again.
The search warrant was issued at 4:00am today, and was signed by Judge Hussein Shaheed, who was just recently appointed to the Criminal Court.
While the court order only authorized the search, Ibrahim Muaz Ali, Spokesperson of the President’s Office, said on Twitter that a court order for Faris’ arrest has also been issued.
