British Ambassador to the Maldives, James Dauris, has expressed optimism at MP Faris Maumoon’s release from state custody.
In a post on his Twitter account on Thursday, Dauris said that it was ‘good to hear’ of Faris’ release but was keen to note that other political leaders remain imprisoned under contentious terms.
Good to hear @farismaumoon is out of prison today.

Other political leaders are facing sentences that bar them from standing in 2018 presidential election, including Sheikh Imran, in detention for 1000 days today.
Democracy involves choice. Maldivians deserve freedom to choose.
While Dauris especially notes the incarceration of Adhaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb said that the charges put forth against him are a lie and unlawful.
The Criminal Court released Faris from remand on the condition that: he does not interact and influence witnesses, he not leave the country, he attend court if he is summoned to do so.
The court had previously remanded Faris until sentencing.
