Electricity, water prices to be standardized in atolls

Atolls are to be charged for electricity and water at the same rate as in Male’.

Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim made the announcement at a press conference on Tuesday.

Minister Thoriq detailed that Fenaka Corporation has changed their rate to be the same as STELCO, but only for tariffs below 400 units. He added that for those that exceed the amount, a discount of MVR 400 will be provided.

After these changes, tariffs below 100 units will receive a rate of MVR 1.5, tariffs between 101 and 200 will receive MVR 1.7, tariffs between 201 and 300 will receive MVR 2.15, and tariffs between 301 and 400 will receive MVR 2.5.

The price of water in the atolls has also been reduced to the levels in Male’.

The changes will be implemented at the start of March.

At the press conference, Minister Thoriq also said they are working to reduce electricity prices by relying on renewable energy and using low-power devices such as LED lights.

The government has recently hiked fuel prices after an increase of price in oil in the international market.
