Former Home Minister Umar Naseer has said he has done nothing to be accused of corruption.

An audit report on the home ministry released on Sunday has stated that the home ministry, during Naseer’s time as minister, spent funds for the “Minivan 50” celebrations in 2015 against set policies.

The audit report states that MVR 70 million of the funds given out by the finance ministry was used against policy to fund various activities celebrating the 50-year anniversary of Maldives independence.

Speaking to Raajje.mv on Monday, Naseer denied all accusations of corruption.

Naseer said the audit report did not accuse him of anything, and that the expenses of the “Minivan 50” celebrations were overseen by a committee of cabinet members appointed by President Abdulla Yameen and by a special office also formulated by the President.

He said the work was done in a transparent manner with employees of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Audit General’s Office present during the planning.

Naseer, who was the chairman of the “Minivan 50” committee, said the activities were financed after the finance ministry signed off on them, and that approval from the ministry were obtained for every individual activity.

According to the audit report, the “Minivan 50” celebrations were financed against the special permissions issued by the finance ministry, including spending MVR 63 million on various activities without approval.

The Auditor General has recommended relevant authorities to conduct further investigations.

Naseer has recently announced his decision to join Jumhoree Party (JP), and his signing ceremony has been scheduled for Thursday.
