MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa had criticized the government’s economic policies and described its gravitation towards taking out loans for development as bargaining at the Indian Chala Market.

MP Ghafoor said while speaking at the opposition rally held in Magoodhoo island of Faafu Atoll that officials of the current government have been begging for loans and bargaining as they would at the Chala Market, or ‘Chalai Bazaar’ a famous market in India’s Thiruvananthapuram.

Speaking on Maldives’ current economic condition, MP Ghafoor said that while the government claims that the economy itself healthy despite loans, recent reports say otherwise.

Ghafoor is referring to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently stating that Maldives’ economy is fragile and needs to ensure long-term sustainability.

Ghafoor also said that there are countless corruption cases ongoing that involve state-operated institutions and corporations, adding that ‘this government has created rich people’, who had no means to wealth before they occupied state-appointed positions.

He added those in power that benefit from corruption are not going to ‘stall their greed’ just for the sake of justice and social unity.
