Bike Maldives, a local cycling association, has taken the initiative to organize the ‘National Bike Championship’.

Asma Hassan, Bike Maldives’ secretary-general, said that the contest will be held from the 24th to 25th of this month.

Members of the association will take part in 200, 1000, 4000, meter and 30 and 60-kilometer rides. Individuals who wish to compete in the championship can do so for as little as MVR 200 (USD 12.9).

Participants will be competing in teams of five, with four competing together and a one substitute member. Teams can participate in three of the above rides.

Bike Maldives said that the event is primarily meant to support those who travel on bicycles – something for which the government recently presented an award – and to encourage more people to do so.
