Civil Court of the Maldives has thrown out the case filed by RaajjeTV over the MVR 500,000 fine imposed by Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC).

MBC had fined RaajjeTV by the amount for allegedly broadcasting content that impacted national security. The said content was a speech made by Thimarafushi Constituency MP Mohamed Musthafa during a live broadcast.

RaajjeTV had filed case in Court alleging that the fine by MBC violated judicial and legal means and to nullify that ruling.

Civil Court letter sent to RaajjeTV stated that any case concerning a defamation suit can be reviewed by a Court only after the fine is paid up. This, the letter noted, was clearly stipulated is clause 32 (a) of the Defamation Laws. Civil Court letter added that as there was no proof that RaajjeTV had paid the fine, the Court cannot accept and register the case.
