Police on Wednesday brought in five suspects, arrested in a drug operation that led to the seizure of 4.5 kilograms of narcotics, to their remand hearing to have the court rule for their release.

The Magistrate Court in Hithadhoo of Addu City ruled that the five suspects, all native to India, be released until the investigation in the case is complete and forwarded for prosecution.

The five individuals, four men in the ages of 28, 29, 32, and 39 along with a 47-year-old woman, were arrested in an operation involving officers of the police and customs.

They were arrested with multiple kilograms of a substance with powder-like consistency wrapped in rubber hidden in their luggage. Officers had also found items used to consume such substances and package them.

They were taken into custody on 18th September.

Reportedly, authorities received information that they were travelling with large quantities of narcotics smuggled from India through Sri Lanka.
