Parliament has infringed on MP Faris Maumoon’s rights, says lawyer

Several of the parliament’s staff have infringed on MP Faris Maumoon’s constitutionally guaranteed rights, his legal representatives have claimed.
Lawyer Maumoon Hameed said in a letter to the parliament secretariat, which he addressed to secretary-general Ahmed Mohamed, that they do so by refraining to have the parliamentarian present at parliamentary sittings, as required by law.
Maumoon Hameed’s letter noted that the secretariat’s staff had failed to send MP Faris notice letters ahead of parliamentary sittings held on 31 July, 22nd and 23rd August.
The letter also revealed that the secretariat has thus far not responded to a total of seven letter it had received from Faris’ representatives, since 25th July.
“It is very clear what the parliament secretariat’s task is, they are legally required to do anything they must to ensure that the official conduct of parliamentarians is carried out without delay or obstacle. As efficiently as possible. What we are seeing right now is the opposite, we a seeing obstruction and hindrance” Maumoon Hameed said.
MP Faris is facing allegations of bribery over a no-confidence motion he had spearheaded against parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh. Faris was arrested on the 18th of July.
