Criminal Court remands MP Ameeth by four days

Criminal Court has remanded MP Mohamed Ameeth by four more days, after he concluded his original remand sentence of 15 days.
Ameeth is facing allegations of trespassing for having entered the parliament premises on July 24th, along with other opposition parliamentarians.
However, he is being prosecuted on the grounds that he is no longer a parliamentarian. With the Elections Commission announcing that he was no longer an MP, on 18th July.
Ameeth has said that he has not been informed of his dismissal from parliament. His lawyers have said that his incarceration has been marred with squalid conditions – having reportedly denied access to clean drinking water and been kept in ‘burning heat’ throughout the day.
His lawyers have argued that the Elections Commission does not have the mandate to remove Ameeth from parliament, and therefore the charges against him have no legal standing either.
