The nation’s carrier, Maldivian is set to start flights to South Africa.

Island Aviation had confirmed the news, reporting that a team of the company had visited Johannesburg for preliminary studies. The team had completed their market research and had returned back to the Maldives.

Island Aviation said discussions were underway. Even though no decision had been finalized yet, Island Aviation say they remain optimistic.

If the required approvals fall through, then Island Aviation can begin flights in five months.

Maldivian currently operates flights to China, Bangkok, Bangladesh, Trivandrum and Chennai.
