Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has apologized for his role in electing half-brother and incumbent President, Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom to power.
Speaking at Maafannu Kunooz on Sunday night, President Yameen said that he personally had sacrificed much to bring President Yameen to power.
He added that from the onset, President Yameen had acted against the Constitution and PPM laws. This, he said, was deeply disturbing to him.
President Maumoon said that as PPM leader and as someone who had grasped PPM’s manifesto, he was deeply saddened by what is occurring today. He apologized for his part in creating the current situation.
Maumoon said that he had noble intentions in bringing President Yameen to power but said that the current situation was unacceptable. As such, he said he accepted the blame for the current situation.
The work of the opposition, he said, was a reformist one and not an attempt at changing the Government.
