Maandhoo Fisheries Complex, run under Horizon Fisheries, is the first brand to be certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for sustainability.
At a press conference held to announce this on Sunday, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Mohamed Shainee said canned tuna from the Maldives lifted credits for its fair-trade certification as well.
The MSC’s ecolabel, which the non-profit organization receives royalties for, establishes that Maandhoo Fisheries is in-compliance with international standards for sustainable fishing.
The complex is the largest of its kind in the country and has processing plant with a capacity of 130 MT, a cold storage of 3,500 MT, a deep-water berth for shipping, and fishermen’s harbor. ‘
Currently, it processes fish from three islands in Laamu atoll; Gan, Kunahandhoo, and Hithadhoo.
