Court suspends sentences of former defence minister and MP

  • The apex court ordered authorities to refrain from enforcing their sentences until it completes its review of their cases

Supreme Court has suspended the sentences of former defense minister Mohamed Nazim and former MP Ahmed Nazim.

The apex court ordered authorities to refrain from enforcing their sentences until it completes its review of their cases.

The Criminal Court sentenced minister Nazim to 11 years in prison on 27 March 2015 for smuggling weapons, after police found a pistol in his apartment. His attorneys have claimed that he was framed and jailed former vice president Ahmed Adeeb’s DNA was later found on the weapon.

The Supreme Court sentenced former Dhiggaru MP Nazim to 25 years in prison on 1 April 2015 after being found guilty of corruption charges. He has been living abroad after fleeing his sentence during a medical trip on 11 December 2015.
