Joint Opposition coalition’s Presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s spokesperson and Member of Parliament for north-Mahchangoalhi constituency Mariya Ahmed Didi has called on the Elections Commission of the Maldives to ensure that the Presidential Election slated for September is a free and fair one and to authorize voters from using their own pens to cast their votes.
Speaking at a press conference hosted by the joint opposition coalition on Thursday, Spokesperson Mariya stated that although the election center will provide pens, there is no reason why voters may not bring their own pens, and that the commission needs to put in their best efforts to clear the skepticism created in the hearts of citizens toward the commission, as well.
The MP said that the opposition will be submitting a letter to the commission, noting the points of various concerns regarding the September polls, going on to say that the opposition appeals on the commission to ensure a solution is reached regarding the issues to be submitted by the opposition coalition.
As such, the MP said that temporary results must be put up at the election center once voting is concluded and that it must also be provided through writing.
