Kinbidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Riyaz has completed serving his sentence, his attorneys have said.

The former police commissioner was was sentenced to four months and 24 days in April, after being found guilty of obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

A statement issued by his attorneys noted that Sunday marks six months since his incarceration, adding that the prosecutor general’s office had informed Riyaz, via letter on August 14, that there is no room to raise additional charges against him.

Noting that the High Court had sentenced him for four months and 24 days in prison, the lawyers noted that he has spent longer than that behind bars.

They appealed to the authorities to immediately declare that that Riyaz has completed serving time, and to release him.

High Court overturned a lower court verdict acquitting the lawmaker, and found him guilty of obstructing the conduct of a law enforcement officer by refusing to provide access to his mobile phone.

Riyaz has been in police custody since March, after being arrested from an opposition rally. While he was arrested with North-Henveiru constituency MP Abdulla Shahid, Shahid was released shortly after.
