Police have received a complaint regarding President Abdulla Yameen’s assertation that his second vice president, Ahmed Adeeb, has no human rights.
Speaking at a campaign event in Th. Guraidhoo, President Yameen said that people who are indebted to the state have no fundamental rights.
President Yameen said that he was ‘ready’ to forget the ‘personal issues’ between the ailing jailed former vice president and send him abroad for medical treatment, but only after he returns the money stolen from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
In a letter Adeeb’s legal team sent to acting police commissioner Adam Nawaz, they said that doctors have recommended that he seek treatment abroad and that the right to medical treatment is guaranteed by the constitution and international treaties.
The legal team also said that President Yameen has been loudly asserting that Adeeb was jailed for personal reasons and that while he claims he will allow Adeeb to seek treatment abroad after he returns money stolen from the state, no court has found him guilty of graft.
In the letter, they asked the police to investigate President Yameen, who has admitted to the crime of withholding Adeeb’s right to medical treatment.
Adeeb, who is serving sentences totaling 33 years, is suffering from major health issues in prison including glaucoma and internal cysts, his family and attorneys have said.
