Former Elections Commission (EC) President Fuwad Thaufeeq has said it was highly likely that EC’s server will get hacked.
Speaking on a RaajjeTV show, Fuwad said that hackers who had attempted to attack EC in the last election are now close friends with the current commission members.
Fuwad said that EC employees had successfully thwarted attempts to hack and commit electoral fraud in the 2013 presidential election. After the failed hacking attempts, some had even tried to barge into the EC office to create disruption, he said.
Fuwad also said that the perpetrators are now top officials of President Abdulla Yameen’s government and close associates of the current EC members. Therefore, the chances of a hacking attack on the EC server is high, he added.
He also condemned EC’s re-registration work due to the applications being sent to President Yameen’s campaign offices and due to the large amounts of rejections. He also criticized the commission for re-registering citizens to the wrong locations.
Noting that there was a likely chance of the election being postponed, Fuwad said that President Yameen does not wish to hold the election and that the current EC membership is obedient to him.
He added that he does not believe that a free and fair election can be held and advised the opposition and observers to closely monitor the election.
