Queen of the United Kingdom (UK), Her Majesty Elizabeth Alexandra Mary has conveyed her congratulations to the Maldives in commemorations of it’s 53rd Independence Day on the 26th of July.

A message from Her Majesty publicized by the government of UK reads as follows:

“It gives me great pleasure to send Your Excellency Abdulla Yameen my congratulations on the celebration of your Independence Day, together with my best wishes for the good fortune and happiness of the people of Maldives in the coming year.”

Maldives celebrates her independence on the 26th of July every year since gaining independence from the British on the 26th of July 1965 after 77 years as a British protectorate.

While it is noteworthy that Maldives, after having gained independence from the British in 1965, had held strong external bonds with countries with a solid improvement in bilateral ties between foreign countries, the past five years have seen a severe plunge in the conservation of relations with said countries, with the Maldives excluding itself from foreign relations and ties becoming the sourest they have been in recent history.

Maldives had in 2016, withdrawn from the Commonwealth having accused it of interfering in domestic affairs as well as unfair and unjust treatment following a warning from the Commonwealth of suspension if a progress in democracy was not observed.
