Maldives Correctional Service has arrested a woman who tried to smuggle in narcotics into Maafushi Prison, hidden inside a cake.
According to a Correction Official, the woman attempted to do so during a family visit to an inmate at Maafushi Prison. He added that the attempt was made by a woman who went to Maafushi Prison to visit her brother.
MCS expressed concern over the spike in attempts to smuggle in contraband items to the prison.
According to MCS, a family member visiting an inmate attempted to smuggle in a smartphone, charger, a cheaper mobile phone, battery and a SIM card within items brought in for an inmate in December 2016.
The authority further said that smuggling in contraband items has been a huge challenge to reform and rehabilitate the inmates. MCS appealed to inmates, families and the public to halt such attempts.
