The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has said that strict action will be taken against media outlets that broadcast illegal content.

Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan, speaking at a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon, said that it has come to the attention of the MPS that some media stations are broadcasting content illegally, appealing on all stations to refrain from broadcasting such content.

Shifan said that the police will do everything in its power to maintain public peace, if media does not bring an end to the broadcast of impermissible content, adding that police will take strict action against those who promote and encourage the broadcasting of such content going on to say that if media's actions go against the law, police will bring an end to it under legal procedures.

While spokesperson Shifan has made this statement, three officers in casual wear had visited the main office of privately-run Raajje Television (RaajjeTV) and ordered to halt broadcasting content regarding former President Mohamed Nasheed.

The officers had arrived at the station's reception at around 03:00 p.m and said that the order was made under the Prisons and Parole Act. They had however failed to clarify the matter.
