After Christiano Ronaldo was crowned world’s best football player on Monday, it has been revealed that Maldives national team captain, Ali “Dhagandey” Ashfaq had cast in his vote for the winner as well.
While the Best FIFA Football Awards 2016 was held on Monday night, winners were decided by votes from national captains and managers, who each were asked to pick their top three players of 2016, in order.
A first placed pick is worth five points, while a second place is worth three points and third place is worth one point.
Ashfaq’s first pick was Portugal’s Ronaldo, while his second pick was Argentina’s Lionel Messi. Ashfaq’s third vote was given to Uruguay’s Luis Suarez.
For the Best Manager Award, Ashfaq's first choice was Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola. His second choice was Barca’s Luis Enrique, and third pick went to Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane.
Maldives national team coach, Darren Stewart picked Gareth Bale as his first choice for Best Player, giving Ronaldo and Messi second and third spots, respectively.
Stewart picked Leicester City’s Claudio Ranieri as the Best Coach, choosing Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp as a second choice, and Zidane as a third.
Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2016 award was awarded to Raneiri.
Following his win, Ronaldo described 2016 as “the best year of his career.”
Ronaldo received 34.54% of the total votes, while Messi came second with 26.42%, and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann polled 7.53% of the votes.
Ronaldo picked up his fourth Ballon d’Or, only last month.
